– Pick Up your phone 100 or more times a day?
– Use your mobile for greater than 3 hours a day?
– Feel a little lost if you cant find your phone
If not then you fall outside these normal values above
I have used the following analogy with inspiration from a colleague of mine to explain how a mobile phone and looking after your body have more in common than you think.
We will be looking at training and how to prevent injury
Imagine your an iPhone. Every time you train you will use some of your battery level up.
Some workouts reduce your battery capacity more than others and there fore have to be recovered from more.
Some stresses in life slowly run your battery down (poor sleep, diet, hydration etc) and are constantly ongoing like the apps that run on the background of your phone.
When you run out of charge your screen may go blank (get injured) and you are forced to wait till sufficient battery is available to start up again (rest).
Completing high intensity workouts too often will reduce your battery capacity to low levels that risk running out of charge.
Sometimes sessions will take you close to complete flat battery but ensuring the right amount of recovery is important to charge back up to allow you to train without injury. 24hrs active recovery for every race mile has been cited.
You would never go into an important call with 5% battery life, you shouldn’t go into your next high intensity session the same way.
I know myself that if i see the phone battery below 20% its a scramble to get that charger and get topped up
Just pause and think are you doing the same for your body?
